What can photo metadata tell you?
Photo metadata can contain camera, date, location or editing information, but fields vary and can be removed or changed.
Metadata is useful context when it is present and consistent with the rest of the record. Missing metadata does not automatically mean a file is fake.
What matters
- Original files usually preserve more context than screenshots
- Messaging and social apps may strip metadata
- Location data may be absent by design
- Metadata should be interpreted alongside the visible content and other records
