What does a photo timestamp actually show?
A timestamp can provide useful time context, but by itself it does not prove every fact about when, where or how a photo was created.
Time information may come from the device, file metadata, an app or a later export. Software settings and file handling can change what survives.

- Keep the original file when time context matters
- Use surrounding photos and documents for context
- Treat visible timestamp overlays as one signal, not a universal guarantee
- Record uncertainty instead of overstating what a timestamp proves
