What photos should I take after a car accident?

A calm photo checklist for documenting vehicles, positions, visible damage and surrounding context after a collision.

Only when it is safe, photograph the overall scene, every vehicle involved, visible damage, number plates and useful surrounding context. Do not put yourself in danger to take a photo.

What to keep

  1. Prioritize safety and follow local emergency instructions first.
  2. Take wide photos showing vehicle positions and the surrounding area when safe.
  3. Photograph visible damage from more than one angle.
  4. Capture number plates and identifying vehicle details.
  5. Photograph relevant road signs, signals or markings if safe and useful.
  6. Keep related messages, repair estimates and documents with the same record.
