What photos should I take before a contractor starts work?

A practical before-work photo checklist for rooms, surfaces, access areas and existing damage.

Photograph the whole work area before work begins, then capture closer views of existing marks, nearby surfaces, access routes and anything that could later be disputed.

What to keep

  1. Take one wide photo of each work area.
  2. Capture existing scratches, cracks, stains or other marks before work starts.
  3. Photograph nearby floors, walls, doors and fixtures.
  4. Include access routes if materials or equipment will move through them.
  5. Keep the quote, scope or messages that describe the work.
  6. Repeat the same angles after the work is finished when possible.
