What does a timestamp on a photo actually show?

Understand what photo timestamps can and cannot prove, and why context and originals matter.

A timestamp can help show when a file or capture event was recorded, but a timestamp alone does not prove that everything shown in the image is true or unedited.

What to keep

  1. Keep the original file when possible.
  2. Keep related photos in sequence rather than relying on one image.
  3. Record useful context such as what was happening and where, when appropriate.
  4. Treat imported media differently from media captured directly in the app.
  5. Preserve supporting receipts, messages and documents with the photos.
  6. Avoid claiming that a timestamp guarantees legal acceptance or authenticity.
